“Hey, boo, sorry that took so long, but she is in really bad shape.”

On our way to Derek’s house, I tell him everything that happened while I was there with Kiki. When I look over, he has a serious scowl on his face. When he realizes I am looking at him, his features soften somewhat.

“Wow, baby, that is wild. What kind of man puts his hand on a woman? Shoot, I can’t call that boy a “man”; he is simply a punk. I would love to be the one who picks his ass up. She is pressing charges, right?”

“Actually, I didn’t even ask her any of that. It was my intention, but after seeing her like that I just wanted to do whatever it took to make sure she was OK.”

We continue driving and listening to some jazz CD and a crazy thought crosses my mind. I ask myself, why does he seem to be so concerned about Kiki? I mean, he has known for a while that Tony is trifling, and this is not the first time he has put his hands on her—just the first time she has ended up in the hospital. In the past when I would mention stuff to him, he would just shake his head and say she needs to move on. So why is he so worried and concerned now? What is with all the questions?

We pull up in his garage, and he looks over and asks me, “Dang, baby, what are you over there thinking about? You seem to be in really deep thought.”

Until he spoke, I didn’t realize I had zoned out. I shake my head and tell him I am just worried about Kiki. He places his hand on my shoulder and gives it a quick massage. “Well, come on in the house and let big papa take your mind off everything.”
